Workshop/Course Description:
This workshop will provide students an overview of what it means to work as a trilingual interpreter. The presenters will illustrate the
difference between stepping into a bilingual American Sign Language/English assignment and stepping into a trilingual American Sign
Language/English/Spanish assignment. A trilingual ASL/Spanish/English interpreter must identify and bridge gaps not only between Deaf and
hearing cultures, but also between Latino and non-Latino cultures in order to interpret successfully between clients. Large and small group
discussion will focus on cultural expectations, cultural cues and cultural sensitivity when working with consumers from Hearing,
Deaf, and Latino backgrounds.
