I write to you with a special request for your support. The recent budget cuts have been difficult for most all of us, I am sure you understand this. In spite of the harsh reality, we are committed to providing our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with opportunities that enhance their lives and help them strive to be successful in their futures. It is regarding such an opportunity that I write to you.
One of our recent graduates, Maria Hernandez has been accepted to participate in Camp Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (Camp CHLA) August 3 -7, 2009. This is a one of a kind week long camp for high school students who are interested in working in the nursing and health professions. Maria – for as long as I have known her- has wanted to become a Registered Nurse. She will be embarking in a much needed profession, especially in meeting the needs of serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients. Camp CHLA will provide her with hands on experience and job shadowing in the nursing profession. Based on her essay and letters of recommendation, she was one of 50 applicants accepted.
Maria will be the first and only Deaf participant in Camp CHLA. The camp itself has experienced tremendous budget cuts this year. They are having a difficult time finding the funds necessary to pay for sign language interpreters for Maria. This is why your support is being requested. Any and all donations would be most appreciated to help give Maria this one of a kind experience by providing her with a simple, basic human right – access to communication.
