Gilberto asked me to be part of the interpreting team Dolores Huerta's 80th Birthday Celebration, a benefit concert for the Dolores Huerta Foundation that took place last night. The experience was amazing.
The team, Carla Izaguirre, Norma Villegas, Gilberto Partida, and myself, Arlene Narváez, rocked! Gilberto opened my eyes to performance interpreting. I learned a whole new approach that made it fun for the deaf and for the interpreters. Gilberto stole the show –no not from the actual entertainment but from the interpreting team--dancing to the samba and really setting the mood. The clients really benefitted from seeing la samba!
I am so honored to have been part of the team and grateful to Jamila Guerrero-Cantor who took the initiative and set up the appropriate and most qualified interpreters (of which I mean everyone else!) familiar with chicanismos, who understand activism, and who know what it means to have community involvement. Having the right fit made the world of difference. ..as did having headsets and ear plugs!
Thank you Gilberto and Jamila for having me in mind for this.
Thank you to the interpreting team for rocking the house and for setting the bar.
and Thank you to the event organizers for setting us up with a platform, lights, and amazing seats.
hasta pronto
~Arlene
