The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services offers these Summer Interpreter Training opportunities. Both trainings take place June 11-15, 2011 at the Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf (SWCID) in Big Spring, Texas.
Tri-Lingual Interpreter Training: This training focuses on intensive sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign trilingual interpreting. All participants will be screened for knowledge of Spanish and must verify their ASL skills; BEI or RID/NIC certification is preferred. Those without ASL interpreter certification will be screened for ASL skills. The screenings will ensure proper placement for the weeklong training and enhancement of Tri-lingual interpreting skills. All screenings must be completed by May 11. Training is limited to 50 participants.

Deaf Interpreter Training: This training is for individuals who are deaf and are interested in becoming a deaf interpreter, and for deaf interpreters who want to upgrade their skills. There will be two tracks: Introduction to Deaf Interpreter Training and Advanced Deaf Interpreter Training. For the Advanced Deaf Interpreter track, this is limited to 20 participants who are not certified, must show that they have taken college courses under an Interpreter Training Program or have experience as a deaf interpreter. For the Introduction to Deaf Interpreter Track, limited to 20 participants, fluent ASL skills are necessary.

The cost for both the Tri-Lingual Interpreter Training and the Deaf Interpreter Training is $250 for Texas residents and $350 for out of state participants. This cost includes room and meals on the SWCID campus. The SWCID campus in Big Spring can be reached via the Midland-Odessa Airport; van service is available. Only individuals who can participate for the entire week will be considered.
