Dealing with Hispanic Cultural Nuances while Interpreting
Workshop will introduce techniques on the cultural language nuances of Hispanics/Latinos. This will include the communication linguistic and non linguistic codes. There will be discussion on the onomatopoeia and exhalation theory of communication and how this is applied to sign languages. This subtopic will be the base for interpreting techniques with semi-lingual and non-lingual Hispanic deaf people. Participants will demonstrate comprehension by performing some of the techniques while practicing with video and audio material with other participants, entire group, and/or to instructor.
Presenter:
Sergio Peña, BA, CONOCER-LSM, NIC a professional, certified multilingual interpreter and instructor in four languages (ASL, English, LSM, and Spanish). He has worked and taught in a variety of translation settings in both the USA and Mexico regarding the Hispanic/Latino deaf and hearing community. The presenter co-wrote with Dr. Claire Ramsey a chapter in the 7th volume of The Interpretation Series, Interpreting in Multilingual, Multicultural Context, from Gallaudet University Press. Sergio is the writer, coordinator, and teacher of an IPP program at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California in Tijuana, Mexico, participant member of GTES -a governmental committee task force in the writing of the Mexican Sign Language Certification,- certified as an LSM interpreter by the Mexican government, certified as competency evaluator from the Mexican Board of Education, founder member of the first sign language interpreter organization in Mexico (ANILS), president of Asociación de Intérpretes y Traductores de Lengua de Señas de Baja California, and a lead trainer in trilingual professional development with American Sign Languages Services Inc., American Sign Language Latino Services, and executive director of Tijuana SVR, A.C. in Mexico.
